National Contact Point for cross-border healthcare

You are here:

Follow-up treatment

If you need to undergo medical follow-up, you can have this carried out either in Germany or in the state in which you live. Several preconditions must be met in order to do so.

If you have received medical treatment in Germany, medical follow-up may become necessary after you return to the state in which you live. In this case, the regulations on cross-border healthcare provide that you should receive the same medical follow-up in the state in which you live as if the treatment had been carried out there. If, by contrast, you would also like to undergo the medical follow-up in Germany, you absolutely must contact your healthcare insurer in the state in which you live beforehand. The fund may still need to authorise the medical follow-up, particularly if it involves a hospital stay.
