What possibilities exist to obtain treatment in another Member State, in an EEA State or in Switzerland?

This chapter will start by giving you an overview of the possibilities of cost reimbursement should you undergo treatment in another EU country.

Your specific claims based on treatment in another EU country differ depending on whether

Since the treatment procedure and the specific types of treatment available are determined by the law of the country in which you are being treated, we have compiled a list of the National Contact Points for you, who you can contact should you require assistance.

The National Contact Points of the Member State in question will inform you amongst other things

  • which healthcare provider you can contact, if she/he
    • is entitled to settle the costs directly with the local statutory health insurance fund or
    • works exclusively on a private basis
  • what regulations apply when it comes to protecting your data
  • whether you are entitled to inspect your medical record, and
  • what you need to do if you suspect medical malpractice.

Finally, you will also find information as to what you need to bear in mind if you would like to present a prescription which has been issued in another EU country directly in the treatment state or in Germany.
