Finding German healthcare providers

The Internet search engines below will help you when looking for a doctor, dentist or hospital in Germany. In order to optimise your search, check the characteristics of the respective information services described below.

Search engine of the German Hospital Federation

The search engine of the German Hospital Federation offers various ways of looking for hospitals in German and English. This search engine will help you to find hospitals which can as a matter of principle treat you as if you had statutory health insurance in Germany, and can provide medical treatment in accordance with the procedures provided for the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), the Provisional Replacement Certificate (PRC), or form E 112 or S2. The search engine allows you to search according to the following criteria: The search engine of the German Hospital Federation – an organisation which represents the interests of hospitals in Germany – offers five search services in German and English to help you find a hospital. You can refine your search according to the following criteria:

  • regional search
  • search by symptoms and treatment methods
  • search by quality of treatment
  • search by structure and services
  • search by frequently-treated diseases

You can select and combine one or more search options.

The search engines of the statutory health insurance funds

On the website of the National Association of Statutory Health Insurance Funds, you will find an overview of the search engines that are operated by the statutory health insurance funds and their associations. You will find hospitals via these search engines which can also treat you as if you had statutory health insurance in Germany, and can provide medical treatment in accordance with the procedures provided for the EHIC, the PRC, or form E 112 or S2. These search engines generally take as an orientation the hospitals' structured quality reports and allow a search according to the following criteria:

  • diagnoses
  • operation methods
  • quality characteristics
  • barrier-free access
  • specialist departments
  • services offered
  • special equipment
  • staff qualifications.

The search engine of the Association of Private Health Insurance

The search engine of the Association of Private Health Insurance will help you to find not only hospitals which can bill to the German health insurance funds, but also completely private hospitals. These private hospitals can only treat you as a person with private health insurance, and not as if you had statutory health insurance in Germany. These private hospitals cannot provide treatment via an EHIC, a Provisional Replacement Certificate, or form E 112 or S2. Please approach the hospital administration in question, or contact us, in order to find out whether the hospital which you have found is purely private, or whether it can also bill to the statutory health insurance funds in Germany.

The search engine allows you to search for hospitals in Germany according to the following search criteria:

  • regional search
  • search for the name of the hospital
  • search by diagnosis and desired treatment.

The search engine of the Cancer Information Service

The search engine of the Cancer Information Service can help you to find cancer centres that are certified by the German Cancer Society and by the German Hospital Federation. A major characteristic of these centres is that the healthcare providers working there have a wealth of experience when it comes to treating tumour patients and that physicians with a variety of specialisations work together.

You can use the search engine to search by specialisation, distance and region.

You can also use the search engines of the Association of Substitute Health Insurance Funds or of the Federal Association of Company Health Insurance Funds. These enable you to launch detailed search queries using the following criteria

  • in-patient treatment
  • out-patient treatment
  • equipment and therapies
  • performance of the clinic/of the specialist department
  • quality assurance

Quality reports are also available there for each facility.

Search engine of the National Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians

The portal of the National Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians – this organisation represents the interests of registered contract doctors (Kassenärzte) in Germany – enables patients who have statutory health insurance to search for doctors. These doctors also treat patients on a private basis.

This search engine only lists registered contract doctors. The latter can therefore also treat you as if you had statutory health insurance in Germany, and can provide medical treatment in accordance with the procedures provided for the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), the Provisional Replacement Certificate (PRC), or form E 112 or S2.

The search engines are structured on a regionally-specific basis, and offer various options depending on the region.

The search engines of the statutory health insurance funds

On the website of the National Association of Statutory Health Insurance Funds, you will find an overview of the search engines listing doctors that are operated by the statutory health insurance funds and their associations. The search engines allow regional searches, and you can also search by specialist areas or names.

This search engine only lists registered contract doctors. The latter can therefore also treat you as if you had statutory health insurance in Germany, and can provide medical treatment in accordance with the procedures provided for the EHIC, the PRC, or form E 112 or S2.

The search engine of the Association of Private Health Insurance

The search engine of the Association of Private Health Insurance will help you to find not only registered contract doctors who can bill to the German health insurance funds, but also registered private physicians. The latter can only treat you as a person with private health insurance, and not as if you had statutory health insurance in Germany. These private physicians cannot provide treatment via an EHIC, a PRC or form E 112 or S2. Please approach the healthcare provider in question, or contact us, in order to find out whether the healthcare provider whom you have found only bills on a private basis, or whether they can also bill to the statutory health insurance funds in Germany.

The search engine allows you to search locally, as well as to search by specialist areas or additional specialisations.

The search engine of the National Association of Statutory Health Insurance Dentists

The portal of the National Association of Statutory Health Insurance Dentists – this organisation represents the interests of registered contract dentists (Kassenzahnärzte) in Germany – enables patients who have statutory health insurance to search for dentists.

This search engine only lists registered contract dentists. The latter can therefore also treat you as if you had statutory health insurance in Germany, and can provide medical treatment in accordance with the procedures provided for the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), the Provisional Replacement Certificate (PRC), or form E 112 or S2.

The feature for looking for dentists is integrated into the search engines listing doctors via the “Dentistry (Dentist)” (Zahnmedizin [Zahnarzt]) specialisation search option.

This search engine only lists registered contract dentists. The latter can therefore also treat you as if you had statutory health insurance in Germany, and can provide medical treatment in accordance with the procedures provided for the EHIC, the PRC, or form E 112 or S2.

The search engine of the Association of Private Health Insurance

The search engine of the Association of Private Health Insurance will help you to find not only registered contract dentists who can bill to the German health insurance funds, but also registered private dentists. The latter can only treat you as a person with private health insurance, and not as if you had statutory health insurance in Germany. These private physicians cannot provide treatment via an EHIC, a PRC or form E 112 or S2. Please approach the healthcare provider in question, or contact us, in order to find out whether the healthcare provider whom you have found only bills on a private basis, or whether they can also bill to the statutory health insurance funds in Germany.

The search engine allows you to search locally, as well as to search by specialist areas or additional specialisations.

The search engine of the Federal Association for Rehabilitation (Bundesarbeitsgemeinschaft für Rehabilitation - BAR) enables you to search for a facility that is suited to you among more than 1,000 in-patient rehabilitation facilities all over Germany. The search engine allows searches both by treatment spectrum and particular specialisations, as well as by parameters such as staffing or therapeutic and diagnostic procedures.

Children with a weight at birth of less than 1,500 g need intensive, high-quality medical care in hospitals which are specialised in this field. The search engine provided by AQUA-Institut GmbH enables you to obtain an overview of perinatal centres by name, region, distance, treatment routine (case numbers) and/or premature infant survival as a whole, as well as survival where there are no serious diseases. AQUA-Institut GmbH is an institute for applied quality improvement and research in health care.

Finding midwives

You will find a considerable amount of information at www.hebammensuche.de to help you find a midwife or a birth centre. You can use postcodes to search by region, or you can enter enquiries by midwife speciality.

Furthermore, you can look for a midwife via the German Midwifery Association (Deutscher Hebammenverband) on the web pages of the midwives’ regional associations.

The search engines of the midwives’ regional associations – the largest lobby of employed and self-employed midwives – also offer you a facility to search for midwives in private practice who can help you with their expert knowledge and experience before, during and after birth. Most of the regional associations’ search engines allow you to search by the postcodes, telephone code, specific fields and languages of the midwives in question.

The German Association of self-employed midwives (Bund freiberuflicher Hebammen Deutschlands e.V.), which represents the interests of self-employed midwives, also offers a search engine allowing you to obtain a list of all practising self-employed members by clicking the respective German Land.

Finding birth houses

This search engine will permit you to find an overview of birth houses in Germany that are managed by midwives, broken down by Federal Länder.

Finding midwife-operated delivery rooms

You can follow the link below to an overview of those hospitals in Germany which have both a delivery room headed by physicians and one that is exclusively operated by midwives.

The chemists’ search engine offered by Deutsche Apotheken Netzwerk GmbH’s pharmacy network offers an overview of all chemists in Germany. It makes it possible to search by city or postcode. At the same time, you will find out which chemists offer an after-hours service.

You can use the search engine of the physiotherapists’ association Deutscher Verband für Physiotherapie to enter a qualification or postcode to find physiotherapists anywhere in Germany or in a specific area.

The pulmonary emphysema patients’ organisation Lungenemphysem-COPD Deutschland has drawn up a list of all currently-known liquid oxygen stations in Germany, Austria and Switzerland for people who need an oxygen supply. You can find out the operator’s address by clicking on the country and city in question.
